UM Coverage Through The Company’s Vehicle Policy

Many Louisiana companies purchase UM coverage in addition to liability coverage for their automobiles.  This UM coverage purchased by the company can sometimes provide a tremendous benefit to you if you have been injured while riding in, or driving, a company vehicle.  Unfortunately in order for the coverage to apply, you must have been traveling in the vehicle at the time of the accident.

The purpose of UM coverage is to provide insurance for situations in which there is a lack of, or under funding of, insurance to cover the damages caused by the accident.  Typically in a commercial vehicle accident situation the company’s UM policy will cover you as a driver or passenger in that company vehicle if another vehicle caused or contributed to the accident.  In such a situation traditionally you would pursue your damages from the other vehicle which contributed to the accident.  However, if that vehicle does not have adequate insurance to pay for your damages, you can then pursue the UM portion of the company-issued insurance policy.  In such a way, the company has essentially purchased additional insurance which will provide you with coverage.

A good Louisiana injury lawyer or car accident lawyer will know how to determine if UM insurance is available to you from sources other than your own insurer.  After an accident, you need to determine what insurance is available, and then how to recover from it.
